I have blogged and written about things like Memorial Day before. I have blogged about Veteran's Day, Pearl Harbor, etc.
I feel such a responsibility in sending out this message. Yes, many people get the day off and it is a three day weekend. Yes, it is about lots of different types of getaways, celebrations, concerts, BBQ's and more. But here is the real deal about Memorial Day. I am stealing some of this from a great website that is all about Memorial Day.
"Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead".http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html
There you have it, honoring those that served and died doing so.
If you have an American flag, be sure to get it outside and flying high, remind your friends when you are together that you know what Memorial Day is.
If you are looking for something to do, check out some of your local cemeteries or museums to see if they are having any kind of remembrance. Often times they will have veterans there to speak or honor and your children can meet an actual WWII veteran, and they wont be around for much longer.
Have a fabulous and safe weekend and take some time to honor and remember the men and women who fought and died for this country called America.
