It takes someone special to be a teacher. I have teachers in my family and teacher friends and had lots of clients as teachers. Having spent the entire day with 50 fifth graders reminded me of this fact. I've actually always really liked going to the girl's schools and helping out. Kids crack me up. Some kids are so shy, some are tough nuts to crack and some are just annoying. They are fun to joke around with and you can tell them anything and they believe you because you are an adult. Today was filled with "are you Riley's mom?" I usually answered with "that depends". My quilling station went well except for the threetimes that kids spilled ink. Black, permanent ink. I thought the teacher was going to have a litter of kittens when she saw the first spill. Luckily, the janitor had this magical green stuff in a spray bottle and it got all the ink out of everywhere. You gotta love a janitor. Teachers have always told me that you make friends with the janitor, he's the one that knows how to get things done.
Kids were dressed up and they looked great. Some really authentic looking costumes and even boys in white powdered wigs. There was a game of nine pins, corn meal cakes, gingerbread, pinch pots of clay, churning butter, candles, sock dolls and wampum. Every kid received wampum after they did the craft. It's beads for a necklace. Ours were macaroni. High class stuff...
Now I am being serenaded by two wild 11 year olds and a 14 year old wrestling on the living room floor. World Wrestling Championships.
Tomorrow is all about cleaning and packing and moving. Looking forward to being in our cute lil house.
Back to Riley, on Thursday they had to do their own living history museum. Kids and parents from the school would come up to the 5th graders and ask them questions about their character. Riley was a plantation owner's wife and her name was Elizabeth Ingalls. She told them that she was "stuck up" and that because she was the wife of a tobacco plantation owner that she was supposed to be that way. Her teachers all complimented me on how "poised" she was and self confident. I was glad to hear it, though not surprised.
Signing off now, Bob has the new James Bond movie on pause for us down stairs.
